Commissioning a piece can be a fun and rewarding process. It starts with a fairly detailed conversation to understand what function the piece has to perform. It is also useful for me to see the space that the piece is to occupy. Just as importantly, I need to establish your personal taste and style.
Anything you can bring to the table at this stage to illustrate this such as sketches, photographs magazine clippings or artwork could be useful. I then use this information to produce a sketch which we can use as a starting point. Further honing of the design may be required and also decisions such as the type of timber or other materials to be used, colour of upholstery if required and method of construction need to be made.
I then calculate an estimated price and time scale to build the piece. When this is agreed I require a deposit normally amounting to around half the total value of the piece. I then start the building process.
During this time I take digital photographs of key points in the construction so that you are kept up to date with the process. When it is finished it will be delivered to you, normally by me personally at which point the remainder of the fee is payable. Here are photos of some recent commission work.
